About.

Hi. My name is Jayne, and I’ve been sewing since I was a child. When other children were playing with Barbie and Sindy dolls, I was using my grandmother’s hand-cranked sewing machine to make clothes for mine! I’m a mum myself, although my “little one” is all grown up now. When she was small I was frustrated by the overwhelmingly pink offerings in ready-to-wear children’s clothes, so I sewed for her in order to have things that stood out from the crowd.

It’s true that there is a huge variety in baby and children’s clothing today, and also in the price tags. People are increasingly concerned about the ethics and welfare issues around the manufacture of inexpensive clothing. But a close look at the construction of even some “designer” brands reveals that the quality isn’t necessarily indicated by the price.

The Scandinavian countries have a great approach to clothing their children, and it’s gaining in popularity in the UK. They believe in using natural, organic, highest quality fabrics for baby and children’s clothing. Since these items are hard-wearing, wash and last well, they favour gender-neutral, charming prints and colours, which can be passed on from sibling to sibling regardless of gender.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing a Finnish Baby Box, you’ll know that the clothing is striking, colourful, practical and of gorgeous quality. My aim is to provide clothes, hand made here in the UK, inspired by this approach and using of some of those beautiful Scandinavian fabrics, plus others sourced here and across Europe. For me, the focus is on quality and eye-catching design.

The advantage of handmade is that not all children follow that 50th centile line on the growth charts. By providing height (or length!), chest and waist measurements, you can be sure of clothing that will fit your child well, with room to grow. In addition, items like the Four Seasons Joggers are designed with foldover cuffs and waistbands, to help them fit your child for that little bit longer.

Good levels of lycra/ elastane in the fabrics mean that BenniNaturals items return to their proper shape after washing. It also means that sleeves pulled up for “messy jobs” (like meal times, sand and water play) stay put, and don’t roll or slide down into the way of the action.

I hope you enjoy exploring my site; I’d be delighted to answer any questions you have, or to help you select a handmade garment for a special little someone.

Have a colourful day!
Jayne
